Generally, storage tank water heaters have a usable capacity of about 70%, meaning a typical 50-gallon model has available 35 gallons of truly hot water. When there is high demand, like back to back showers in a large family, the hot water can be exhausted. When it does, a family will need to wait for the water to get hot again.
